National Maritime Day Observance is Thursday, May 22, 2014, commemorating the date in 1819 that the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia on the first ever transoceanic voyage under steam power. The holiday was created by the United States Congress on May 20, 1933, National Maritime Day reflects the gratitude that Americans have for the maritime industry and the benefits it brings to the country. It also recognizes ships and seafarers who have held a special place in the nation’s history.
In honor of this day, The Propeller Club of Northern California will host an event at the Naval Air Museum in Alameda. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the museum filled with exhibits and archival materials. The program will feature PCNC member Nick Marrone, Vice President of Seafarers International Union, reading the President’s Maritime Proclamation and MARAD Director John Hummer who will outline the Strong Ports Program. A box lunch will be served.
At every Propeller Club event, members have the option to sponsor a California Maritime Academy cadet, as part of our program to support tomorrow’s maritime leaders. Cadet sponsorship is available at the member rate.
