In the MoU, both parties aim to strengthen the presence and integration of StormGeo’s fleet performance management and weather intelligence solutions on DNV GL’s independent data platform, Veracity. “With Veracity, we have built an independent network of industry relevant companies, where the members of the network can buy, combine, share and collaborate on data to optimize their operation – all while knowing their data is safe and secure throughout the process,” says Mikkel Skou, Director of Veracity at DNV GL. “StormGeo is an important supplier to many of Veracity’s customers and we have received interest from our clients for stronger integration with StormGeo in our platform products. We now look forward to closely examine how we can do this in a manner where both companies’ customers can gain from our united strengths.”

The MoU builds on an agreement from March 2019 when DNV GL and StormGeo announced that they would consolidate their fleet performance solutions under the StormGeo banner. The agreement combined DNV GL’s ECO Insight and Navigator Insight solutions with StormGeo’s FleetDSS and ship reporting solutions. StormGeo is now servicing a fleet of more than 12,000 vessels that receive route advisory, weather intelligence, navigation and planning, or fleet performance.

PMA and ILWU Pledge Joint Effort to Win Back Lost Market Share from East and Gulf Coast Ports

PMA and ILWU Pledge Joint Effort to Win Back Lost Market Share from East and Gulf Coast Ports

In an unusual display of unity, Willie Adams, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Jim McKenna, president of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) pledged to work together to help U.S. West Coast ports regain lost market share from rival ports on the East and Gulf Coasts.

Both leaders agreed that it was vital to lobby the two West Coast rail providers, the Union Pacific and the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe, to reduce the rates they charge for transporting containers to and from the West Coast ports.

Speaking before the Propeller Club of Northern California at Oakland, Willie Adams said the West Coast ports “need to make sure our voices are heard in Washington, DC… our competitors on the East and Gulf Coasts are being heard and it is costing us.”

Sea Level Rising article

A new U.S. report, using advanced analytic software, says waves and storm surges are gaining momentum from sea level rise and collectively pose a more immediate threat than was previously believed. The result could be serious damage to California coastal cities and ports by 2040.

Elaine Forbes, executive director for the Port of San Francisco, told AJOT that rising sea levels are already threatening downtown San Francisco and Port property requiring the construction of a new sea wall (photo below). The projected cost is $5 billion.

The impact is similar to sea level rise driven storm surge damage suffered by U.S. cities and ports along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts from Hurricanes Katrina, Sandy and Harvey.

PCNC Board Supports Port of San Francisco Fresh Fish Market at Fisherman’s Wharf

PCNC Board Supports Port of San Francisco Fresh Fish Market at Fisherman’s Wharf

At the February 12, 2019 PCNC Board members expressed their support for the new Fresh Fish Market at the Port of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Board Member Anita Yao (Port of San Francisco) introduced the team from the Fresh Fisherman’s Group that is selling fresh fish straight off their boats!
The group that met with the PCNC Board included: Giuseppe Pennisi—owner of F/V Pioneer, Nicholas Krieger—owner of F/V Take Time and Jolene Skinner who are pictured along Board Members Nick Marrone, Anita Yao and Ron Brown. Not pictured but also attending were Laura Schaefer, Community Programs Operations Director, Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District and Randall Scott, Executive Director, Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District.

Giuseppe “Joe” Pennisi   and Nicholas Krieger have been selling rockfish, petrale sole and other fish from their boats as part of this exciting new project at the Port of San Francisco that allows fishermen to selldirectly to retail customers from their boats.

The Northern Waterfront, including Fisherman’s Wharf, Hyde Street Pier and Pier 39, draws 15 million visitors a year, according to the Port, yet few people — whether tourists orlocals — are able to take part in the traditional fishing culture there.

“It’s fun seeing people at the dock,” Pennisi said. “Sometimes we had 30 people hanging out.”

The Pennisi family has a long tradition of sustainable fishing in California and has been trawling in the waters off of California since the early 1900s. Giuseppe “Joe” Pennisi started fishing in California when he was seven years old. Beginning his career working on his father’s boats, he has made a career fishing everywhere from Monterey to the Bering Sea. In 2000 he purchased his boat the Pioneer and launched Pioneer Seafoods.
